Abstract

Dominican Friar Diego Duran’s Historia de las Indias de Nueva España e Islas de la Tierra Firme (1581) is one of the most studied chronicles of missionary tradition, not only due to its thorough description of the aboriginal past and its illustrative prints, but fundamentally because of its complex mixture between criticism of idolatry, panegyric of evangelization and the hybridization present in the text. The speaking subject is presented as the agent of evangelization who discursively produces an approach to the aboriginal culture through his missionary and writing work.
