About the Journal
Focus and scope
Founded in 1996, Orbis Tertius is a peer-reviewed academic open access journal. It publishes original and previously unpublished articles and bibliographic reviews covering topics from all areas of literature, with particular emphasis, but not limited to, Argentine and Latin American literature and cultural processes.
Orbis Tertius is a publication of the Center for Literary Theory and Criticism of the Institute for Research in Humanities and Social Sciences, part of the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of the National University of La Plata and the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research.
Frequency
Orbis Tertius has two yearly issues: one in May (covering May to October), and another in November (covering November to April).
Peer review process
Orbis Tertius accepts original and unpublished works in Spanish. Submission of a work implies the author's obligation not to simultaneously submit it for consideration by another publication. All contributions will be subject to academic review by internal and external peers (double-blind review). The editorial team reserves the right to accept or reject works, based on the thematic scope, strict adherence to editorial standards, and adherence to the ethics and anti-plagiarism policy. The opinions expressed by the authors are their own. Calls for submissions for the various sections are open, as are periodically issued for materials on specific topics. All submitted manuscripts are received by the Editorial Office, who is responsible for acknowledging the authors' receipt. The editors initially evaluate the works to determine whether the topics fit within the journal's stated scope. If this requirement is not met, the submissions are rejected. If the initial evaluation is positive, two referees specialized in the field are selected to assess the quality of the work. The review system adopted by Orbis Tertius is double-blind (the anonymity of authors and reviewers is preserved).
There are three possible evaluation outcomes:
- Accepted without changes.
- Accepted subject to modifications (no further review). The author must make the requested modifications.
- Rejected (the manuscript is returned to the author, along with the reviewers' opinions).
Orbis Tertius uses anti-plagiarism tools. Authors are expected to respect the good practices and codes of ethics for scientific publications, that is, avoid double submissions, ghost and honorary authorship, plagiarism, data manipulation, conflicts of interest, and compliance with research ethics policies.
The formal specifications for the papers can be found in the About - Submissions menu. The digital file should be named with the last name of the author (or the person responsible, followed by the phrase "and others" in the case of multiple authors) followed by the section to which the article is intended. (Example: Giménez. Book Review.)
There are no submission, publication, or access fees. Once published, the article will be available for free reading or download.
Open Access Policy
Orbis Tertius provides immediate open access to its contents based on the principle that freely offering scholarly and scientific production to the public contributes to a greater global exchange of knowledge.
Orbis Tertius is an open access publication under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license.
Its contents are also available in the UNLP institutional repositories (Memoria Académica and SEDICI) and in AmeliCA, in open access under the Creative Commons 4.0 license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/deed.es), and in the databases that the publisher deems appropriate for indexing, with a view to increasing the visibility of the journal and its authors.
Likewise, our institution, the Faculty of Humanities and Educational Sciences (UNLP), promotes and supports the open access movement for scientific and scholarly literature. Its publications are free of charge for the author or the reader, encouraging authors to deposit their contributions in other institutional and thematic repositories, with the certainty that culture and knowledge are a common good for everyone.
Data Availability Policy
Orbis Tertius promotes the transparency and reproducibility of published research so that other researchers can replicate the studies described in their articles, either to corroborate or refute the results obtained, in accordance with the provisions of National Law 26.899 on Open Access Institutional Digital Repositories.
To promote the reproducibility of results, the journal requires that authors make available, without restrictions, the datasets used to conduct the research described in their article. If there are limitations arising from ethical or legal reasons, authors must indicate how other researchers should access said data.
All research information and data submitted to Orbis Tertius must be made available in the UNLP Research Data Repository, where extensive, systematized datasets that serve as the basis for the article can be published, adapting them to the FAIR principles. Authors are encouraged to submit their data before submitting their contribution to the journal. Thus, when submitting the article, they only need to provide the URL where the research data is located.
Digital Preservation
Orbis Tertius uses the PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN). This storage system allows journals managed on the OJS (Open Journal Systems) platform to digitally safeguard their content by creating permanent journal archives for preservation and restoration purposes.
Until 2016, Orbis Tertius issues were preserved using the PKP Private Locksmith Network (PKP PLN).
Indexing and inclusion
Orbis Tertius is in Núcleo Básico de Revistas Científicas Argentinas (CAICYT). Also it is in Indice de revistas en consolidación AmeliCA, LATINDEX Catalog-nivel 1- (Online information system for scientific journals in Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain, and Portugal), ULRICH's Periodical Directory, Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), MIAR (Data Matrix for Journal Analysis), SHERPA/RoMEO y CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior)-Qualis (Clas. Ethical Aspects and Conflicts of Interest
The publication of the Orbis Tertius Journal is the collective result of the work and efforts of authors, editors, and reviewers interested in the development of science for social and cultural development. For this reason, and within the framework of the open access policy promoted by the National University of La Plata, the journal will not charge authors any publication fees, making articles immediately available in open access.
The journal's editors are committed to avoiding any conflict of interest among those involved in its production. All submitted texts will be evaluated based on their intellectual content, avoiding any interference in the process based on the authors' ethnic or national affiliation, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or political philosophy. Likewise, external evaluations that interfere with the quality of the work will be rejected.
Authors and reviewers are asked to declare in advance any relevant conflicts of interest they may have, so that they can be considered when assigning evaluations. If any conflict arises after publication of the contribution, a retraction or declaration of the fact will be made, if necessary.
A "conflict of interest" is understood to be a situation in which a divergence arises between an individual's personal interests and their responsibilities regarding the scientific activities they carry out, whether as an author, reviewer, or member of the editorial committee, which may influence their critical judgment and the integrity of their actions. Conflicts of interest may include:
- Financial: when the participant (author/reviewer/editor) has received or expects to receive money for activities related to the research and its dissemination.
- Academic: when reviewers or editors adhere to a certain methodological or ideological tendency, such that they may be biased in evaluating the work of others. For this reason, they are asked to declare this in advance.
- Personal or work relationships: when the participants (authors/reviewers/editors) have some kind of friendship, enmity, or work relationship. To avoid this, editors should consider the authors' funding sources and affiliations in order to select reviewers who do not belong to these specific circles.
- Direct plagiarism (omission of authorship, minor changes made to another's text, failure to indicate what is taken from another text with quotation marks).
- Plagiarism due to the improper use of paraphrases.
- Plagiarism due to the improper use of quotation marks or failure to clearly identify paraphrased passages as such.
- "Self-plagiarism," or recycling fraud, is committed when the appearance of a work is changed and presented as if it were a different work, or when an indication that the work is being recycled is omitted.
Orbis Tertius implements procedures to prevent plagiarism practices—translations, fragmentation of results or "salami slicing," duplication, among others:
- Authors are asked to declare that the article has not been previously published or submitted to other journals for review, and to declare that the text is original.
- It is evaluated by specialized reviewers, who are also asked to pay attention to possible indicators of plagiarism, as they are familiar with the sources and literature on the subject.
- Orbis Tertius uses the iThenticate tool: Plagiarism Detection Software provided by the National University of La Plata through Crossref.
If plagiarism or dishonest statements are detected, authors will be notified to issue a defense or withdraw the submission within 10 days. If plagiarism is found, FAHCE Journals will withdraw the text, indicating in the bibliographic record (if any) “Excluded due to plagiarism.”
International Guidelines
The journal's editors will consider internationally agreed-upon guidelines and guidelines to address specific problems in scientific publishing practice. Instructions provided by COPE | Committee on Publication Ethics will be primarily taken into account. Guidelines from other internationally recognized organizations will also be considered. Authors, researchers, and reviewers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with international guidelines related to publication ethics to avoid errors that could arise due to lack of awareness.
Copyright Policy
The acceptance of contributions by the journal implies the non-exclusive transfer of the authors' property rights to the editor, who allows reuse, after publication, under the Creative Commons (CC) Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license.
The material may be shared (copied and redistributed in any medium or format) and adapted (remixed, transformed, and created into another work), provided that: a) the authorship and the original source of publication (journal, publisher, and URL of the work) are cited; b) it is not used for commercial purposes; c) the same license terms are maintained.
The transfer of non-exclusive rights also implies the authorization by the authors for the work to be deposited in the institutional repositories of the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences (Memoria Académica) and the National University of La Plata (SEDICI) and disseminated through the databases that the editor considers appropriate for its indexing, with a view to increasing the visibility of the publication and its authors.
